Help & Advice

What to do if you, someone in your family or a friend are suffering from severe mental Health?

Contact Local Crisis team on 111 – option 2

If you feel suicidal this is a sign of illness not reality. Many people think that those around them are better off without them which is not true. Tell a family member or friend you trust or ring a 24hr helpline such as the Samaritans 116123 or Papyrus 0800 0684141 . Remember these feelings come and go and you can go on to live a great life full of ups and downs like everyone else.

You want the person you tell to be understanding and sympathetic – a hug would not go a miss and listen to what you are worried about. You want them to be there for you until the professional help arrives. You want them to keep you safe and keep calm even if you are irate. You might need a shoulder to cry on. You want them to stick by you no matter how aggressive you may be.

If It is not a crisis contact local community mental health team –  York is 01904 556705

If it is not urgent then your GP may be able to help you and direct you to the appropriate services

There are drop in centres located across the UK and in York there is a place called York Safe Haven email haven.mhm@nhs.net at number 30 Clarence Street.

Recovery

Recovery can take a long time and it is important to remain patient. Enjoy time for yourself and do not rush. Take time for walks and pursuing hobbies but do not do anything too stressful like playing sports professionally until you are ready. Get yourself back to work and explain to your boss that you need to return to work gradually. Be kind to yourself. Try to fight the fatigue with exercise and also if you have to be up for work you can be and think of the reward of that Friday feeling.
